The sacred mountain, Hakkaisan is one of the biggest mountains in the Echigo region, and has been open to worshipers for more than 1200 years. Hiwatari (walking-on-fire) Festival takes place 1st July every year, and visitors can watch and take part in the ascetic practice of walking on fire.
